Artist Statement and Background

The outdoors has always been a part of my life; I've worked in summer camps for 7 seasons and when you add it all up, I've spent two years of my life living in a tent. The open sky, the hidden woods, sunlit meadows, these are things that give me inspiration. I believe that is why I have always been drawn to the landscape.

The landscape is alive with emotions! The boiling sky of a passing storm, the quiet serenity of a still lake at dawn. Fall colors slashing across your eyes, dancing sunbeams reaching into the woods, decaying barns marking the passage of time.

Out west there are panoramic vistas, harsh deserts but still teaming with life, all unique in their own way. Wisconsin has its own beauty and emotions, the likes of which can be found nowhere else. Wisconsin is also my home, and as a person who enjoys the outdoors, it draws me in as I seek the beauty that is hers. For some, art comes from within, but with the landscape, it is something you must seek, and therefore my art becomes a journey as I explore the world around me, making discoveries along the way.

Kevin Thomas was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, though he did live out of state for 12 years, giving him an appreciation of life in all parts of the country. Kevin was given a Kodak Instamatic camera for his 11th birthday and thus was born his career of discovering the world through a viewfinder. In high school, he received training for photography when classes were offered through the art department.

Much of Kevin's art career was spent doing freelance drawing, mainly drawing cartoons for various publications, including a daily comic strip that ran for 5 years and a weekly cartoon strip that appeared in Milwaukee's Shepherd Express for a year.

Upon returning to Milwaukee, Kevin began exploring other art mediums by receiving formal training for oil and watercolor painting at the Milwaukee Institute for Art and Design. Both mediums (photography and watercolors) have given Kevin the opportunity to express his fascination with the outdoors.
